I received this page and was quite interested in the responses you'd received from so many people whose lives have been adversely affected by the irresponsible exposure of the military by the government.

My husband is one of those who was involved with the atmospheric testing at Desert Rock Nevada in 1957. He was present for Operation Plumbbob, at 15 of 18 tests. HIs job involved laying cable for communications involved in the detonations. This meant walking behind a "deuce and a half," breathing in and swallowing the irradiated dust, which was of a talcum consistency. The men were given no protective gear whatsoever--they wore only their fatigue uniforms. In 1998 he was diagnosed with cancer of the true vocal cord and was given radiation therapy. Just under two months post radiation therapy his cancer had returned, this time in the larynx. Since he had received the maximum dosage possible, he was not a candidate for further radiation therapy. He has other special medical problems which preclude his being a candidate for chemo therapy, so the only course of action was a total laryngectomy. The cancer had metastasized and spread to the larynx, all of the vocal cords, the hyoid bone and a portion of the esophagas. As a result, he can only speak with the aid of an electronic device.

I filed a claim on his behalf, which has been dragging on since April 1999. There have been three denials, followed by a hearing that I had requested on his behalf. We have had to fight for every bit of information from them, and in fact they have given us much information that was supposedly "lost" when his service records were destroyed in St Louis. We are now before the Board of Veterans Appeals, and are really getting some interesting feedback from them. Every time I challenge something they say, they "find new evidence" about his particular type of cancer.
